A practical low-waste guide for Hong Kong
Practical refill, food-storage and low-waste habits for Hong Kong homes.
Start with the decision, not the domain name
Edgar.hk was previously used by Edgar, a Hong Kong bulk-food and zero-waste retailer documented from 2016. This is a new independent reference site, not a continuation of that shop, and it does not publish current store listings without fresh verification.
A realistic low-waste handbook for compact Hong Kong homes, centred on safe refill shopping, food-waste prevention and local verification rather than perfection or product promotion.
The lowest-waste option is usually to use less, use what is already owned, and prevent spoilage before buying a replacement product. The guide therefore separates five kinds of decision and gives each focused question a page of its own.
Choose the route that matches the task
| Route | What it covers | A useful first question |
|---|---|---|
| Start with less waste | Find the waste that matters in your home and choose a first change that will last. | What does zero waste mean in everyday life? |
| Refill and bulk shopping | Containers, tare weight, unit prices and the safety checks that make refill shopping work. | What should I bring to a refill shop? |
| Food storage and waste | Keep food safe, visible and usable before buying another storage product. | What is the difference between best before and use by? |
| Reusables and home | Choose durable items, refill routines and repair habits without replacing useful things early. | Which reusable should I buy first? |
| Hong Kong waste systems | Use current official instructions for recycling, collection and regulated disposables. | How does recycling work in Hong Kong? |
Start with less waste
Find the waste that matters in your home and choose a first change that will last. Reject perfection language and unsupported environmental claims. Separate waste avoided from products merely bought in a different material.
Refill and bulk shopping
Containers, tare weight, unit prices and the safety checks that make refill shopping work. Treat food safety, allergen information, weight and price transparency as prerequisites. Never assume package-free automatically means lower impact or lower cost.
Food storage and waste
Keep food safe, visible and usable before buying another storage product. Follow Centre for Food Safety guidance. Distinguish use-by safety dates from best-before quality dates and never improvise medical or food-safety advice.
Reusables and home
Choose durable items, refill routines and repair habits without replacing useful things early. Assess each reusable by frequency, durability, cleaning, end of life and what it replaces. Do not present a purchase as activism by default.
Hong Kong waste systems
Use current official instructions for recycling, collection and regulated disposables. Date operational information and link to the responsible Hong Kong authority. Never promise that a material is accepted merely because it carries a recycling symbol.
Source policy
For operational waste information, check the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department or Waste Reduction Hong Kong. For food labels, storage and allergen safety, the Centre for Food Safety is the controlling reference.
The site names a short source set on every guide page, but a source list is not a substitute for matching the source to the claim. An official body can still publish an old page, and a current page can describe a general rule that does not cover one person's circumstances.
Write the purchase date or refill date on the container, keep the product identity and instructions, and rotate older stock forward. A container without its contents, date or storage rule is not a useful low-waste system.
| Source | Role | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department | Primary or institutional reference | Check the page relevant to the exact decision and record the date. |
| Waste Reduction Hong Kong | Primary or institutional reference | Check the page relevant to the exact decision and record the date. |
| Centre for Food Safety | Primary or institutional reference | Check the page relevant to the exact decision and record the date. |
| Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department | Primary or institutional reference | Check the page relevant to the exact decision and record the date. |
| Hong Kong Consumer Council | Primary or institutional reference | Check the page relevant to the exact decision and record the date. |
Keep a decision record
For every material choice, write the question in one sentence and name the organisation that can answer it. Add the source title, the date checked, the exact subject it covered and the result. This is more reliable than saving a collection of undated tabs.
Separate facts from preferences. A rule, eligibility condition, product identity or safety instruction needs evidence. A preferred routine, location, teaching style or payment convenience is a personal trade-off. Both matter, but they should not be presented as the same kind of claim.
Finally, record what would make the answer expire. A new intake, changed seller, different material, revised collection scheme or updated government instruction should trigger a fresh check. Check the material, product or food against the responsible Hong Kong authority and the seller's written information before acting.
What this guide will not promise
A recycling symbol, natural-looking package or zero-waste claim does not prove that an item is accepted locally or has the lowest overall impact.
This publication does not sell a product, deal, application or professional service. It cannot decide an official application, resolve an individual dispute or replace food-safety, legal, financial or immigration advice. It can make the questions and verification path clearer.
About this guide
Is this the former organisation that used the domain?
No. This is a new independent informational publication and the historical relationship is disclosed on the site.
Are the external organisations sponsors?
No. They are named because they own or publish relevant primary information, not because they sponsor or endorse the site.
How are changing details handled?
Check the material, product or food against the responsible Hong Kong authority and the seller's written information before acting.
Where should I begin?
Choose the route that matches the immediate decision and open its most specific question.
